BERKELEY, Calif.--Researchers from the Universityof California, Berkeley, reported in a Feb. 6 New Scientist story thattheir Indian field trials of genetically modified (GM) cotton resulted in anaverage 60-percent increased yield compared to less than 10-percent increasesseen in developed countries. Reportedly, this discrepancy led researchers toconclude GM crops are more beneficial in developing countries than inindustrialized nations. The cotton used in the trial was St. Louis-basedMonsanto's Bt cotton, modified with a gene from a common bacterium known as Bacillusthuringiensis.
