CFSAN Posts Online Consumer Guide for Safe Supplement Use

WASHINGTON--The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) launched a Web site dedicated to providing tips for the informed use of dietary supplements. The new site, "Tips for the Savvy Supplement User," was constructed in response to the numerous questions FDA received from consumers seeking health-related information about dietary supplements. According to David Seckman, executive director of the National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA), "We're always happy to see when there's more information that's made available to the consumers. But I think what [this site] does is address the reasons why people might not want to take supplements and it really doesn't focus too much on the benefits of taking supplements. The bulk of the information deals with potential safety issues and adverse events and drug reactions." The site can be found atwww.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/ds-savvy.html.
