Biotech Ban
BALTIMORE--Gov. Parris Glendening (www.ago.state.mo.us)signed a law that bans the raising of genetically modified (GM) fish unless theyare raised in waters that do not connect to other state waterways. In addition,GM fish farmers must ensure that the fish cannot escape their habitats by anyother means to infect natural populations.
Maryland state law already regulates raising hybrids of native species, butthe law had to be modified in light of recent technological advances. The newlaw is intended to protect natural species from being overtaken by biotechspecies.
