Bionov, an industrial producer of natural and protected superoxide dismutase (SOD) from melon, announced the oral administration of SOD B, an SOD-rich melon concentrate, has been linked to numerous health benefits, including reduced oxidative stress and  inflammation. SOD B oral supplementation is also linked to the induction antioxidants SOD, catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in different animal models.

A 2013 study found that supplementation with SOD B corrected oxidative stress in obese hamsters, as well as reduced body weight and insulin resistance (Free Radic Biol Med. 2013 Dec;65:254-61). Though no inflammation was detected in the obese hamster, inflammatory markers were decreased after SOD B supplementation, most likely through the reduction of oxidative stress. The study concluded that SOD B could use its antioxidant properties by inducing endogenous antioxidant release.

Another 2013 study found that high doses of SOD B was safe and beneficial in rats (Food Chem Toxicol. 2013 May;55:323-8). Rats receiving high doses of SOD B had increased endogenous antioxidant enzymes in the liver (copper/zinc and manganese superoxide dismutas) and decreased interleukin-6, a marker of inflammation.
