A convergence of market and lifestyle trends has propelled digestive health to a wellness-driven consideration among consumers. For the 52 weeks ending Feb. 19, 2017, the U.S. market for digestive health ingredients was valued at US$1.04 billion, and represented 10 percent growth compared to sales for the previous year, according to SPINS. Although probiotics maintain the largest share of the market, ingredients such as activated charcoal, fennel, ginger, psyllium and artichoke extract are on the rise. Takeaways include: *61% of U.S. consumers surveyed are concerned about gut health; 43% are looking for new products. *Each probiotic strain works differently, even thriving in different parts of the digestive tract. *Spices such as cumin, cardamom, turmeric and fennel may offer digestive support.
